Maria Wiedner, CEO of Cambridge Finance, founded Real Estate Women (REWomen) in 2012 to address the stark power imbalance in the property sector. What began as a UK-based initiative has since evolved into a global movement, championing diversity and inclusion in real estate. REWomen is dedicated to empowering underrepresented groups, providing them with the tools, network, and opportunities needed to thrive in the industry.
Below, you’ll find insights into the network’s mission, impact, and how you can get involved. Whether you’re looking to connect, mentor, or learn, REWomen offers a platform for meaningful change in the built environment sector.Who formed the Real Estate Women network, and when?
Cambridge Finance CEO Maria Augusta Wiedner, MRICS, CFA formed Real Estate Women (REWomen) in 2012.
This Network Spotlight on Real Estate Women (REWomen) was gathered from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), a global professional body dedicated to upholding standards and advancing knowledge in the built environment. With over 130,000 members across 140+ countries, RICS plays a key role in shaping public policy, promoting sustainability, and regulating chartered professionals in real estate, land, construction, and infrastructure.
What inspired the formation of the network?
The power imbalance in the sector was so blatant that the network was born out of pure necessity – a way to flip the script, push diversity and support women at every level in real estate.
What is the aim of the network?
We want to empower women in real estate. But it’s not just about women; it’s about underrepresented groups everywhere. We’re here to level the playing field, to give people the tools, network and opportunity to rise in this sector and thrive.
Is the network UK-based, or global?
We started in the UK, but REWomen is becoming a global force. We’re attracting members from all over the world because the issues we address aren’t limited to one country. This is a global movement for diversity in real estate.
How can other members join or get involved with the network?
Head to our website to apply for membership, or come to one of our events. Whether you’re looking to network, mentor or learn, we’ve got something for you. And once you’re in, you’ll be part of a growing community.
How often does the network meet? And does it meet face to face, virtually or both?
We meet regularly both in person and online for webinars, round tables and networking events. The virtual options allow us to connect globally without being limited by location.
Such events are a core part of what we do. From educational sessions and leadership development to panels on issues such as the gender pay gap and sustainability, we make sure our members are always at the cutting edge of the sector.
What has been the experience been of members working in surveying and the wider built environment sector?
Our members have thrived: they’ve broken through barriers, elevated their careers and built invaluable networks. The support and mentorship that REWomen provide help them navigate what can be a pretty unforgiving sector, especially when you’re not the typical professional.
What do you think organisations in the built environment could be doing better to support the employees, clients and communities you represent?
Organisations need to stop just ticking boxes and get real about diversity. Hire diverse talent, pay people what they’re worth, and create environments where different perspectives aren’t just welcomed but demanded. And if you’re not mentoring the next generation, you’re already behind.
What advice do you have for women entering the sector or trying to set up their own surveying business?
Become an expert, but don’t do it alone. Network hard and get yourself a mentor, someone who has been through the trenches and knows what it takes. If you’re starting your own business, don’t wait for perfection. Launch, learn and adapt fast.
Is there anything else you would like to share about the network?
REWomen isn’t just about professional development – it’s a movement. We’re redefining what success looks like in real estate. And we’re just getting started. So, if you’re ready to disrupt the status quo, this is the place for you.
